“Capricious memory, merciless and merciful”

Quote from: Breaking Silence by Linda Castillo

"Listening to a recorded novel whilst making work recently I was struck by the astuteness of this one line. I think it describes memory perfectly and the relationship humans have with memory. Some memories are painful, some seem blessed. Some we’d like to be able to forget and some we wish we could more easily conjure back to life with all their associated sensations. Some, of course, are a mixed bag, with both good and bad attached emotions and feelings. Some, when seen in hindsight or in context might seem less or more significant, positive, negative than they do in their immediate aftermath. I find these discrepancies fascinating" - Stephanie Smart
